What is a Patent?

A patent is a right granted for any device, substance, method or process which is new, inventive and useful. A patent is legally enforceable and gives the owner the exclusive right to commercially exploit the invention for the life of the patent. This is not automatic. You must apply for the rights of ownership to your invention.

Patent laws differ from place to place but generally there are two types of patents available. A standard patent gives you long-term protection and control over an invention while a petty patent is a relatively fast, inexpensive protection option, lasting for a shorter period of time.

Patents give legal protection if you have invented new technology that will lead to a product, composition or process with significant long-term commercial gain. In return, patent applicants must share their know-how by providing a full description of how their invention works. This information becomes public and can provide the basis for further research by others.

Japanese Patents

The patents described on this site (so far) were collected from publicly available information on the Japan Patent Office website. We intend to expand the list at a later date but Japan seemed to be a great place to start since fishing is so popular in that country. I hope that the inventions listed on this site will inspire you to develop your own inventions so that the design of fishing gear can continue to improve. Please note that patents laws are quite complex (as are patents themselves). If you do make a great discovery, go and see someone like a Patent Attorney or Patent Lawyer to make sure that your invention is legally protected. Most importanly, apart from informing your Patent Attorney, you should keep your invention top secret until you have registered your invention.
